Bend City Urges Water Conservation to Secure Future Sustainability
by Madi Wagner / Bendlocal.org
The City of Bend is emphasizing the importance of conserving water to benefit our future. By reducing water use by 7.9 billion gallons through 2040, the city can avoid costly infrastructure expenses and the need for additional water rights. This effort would translate to a decrease of about 13 gallons per utility customer per day for the next 15 years. Currently, the average Bend customer uses 157 gallons of water each day, with the total consumption for all Bend water customers averaging 4.6 billion gallons annually.
As Bend continues to grow, water conservation is seen as a crucial and affordable tool to manage increasing demand. The city has ramped up efforts to assist customers in saving water. With the irrigation season underway and high summer temperatures expected, it is vital to be mindful of water usage and waste. Simple steps like inspecting irrigation systems, adjusting sprinklers, and following irrigation schedules can help in reducing water consumption.
To further support water conservation, various programs such as rebates and xeriscape landscaping are available. Customers are encouraged to explore these initiatives through their respective water providers' websites. Water conservation remains a shared responsibility that connects us all in safeguarding this essential resource for the future.
