In 1968, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) released a public service announcement (PSA) that explained the difference between the terms "fire fighter" and "fireman." The PSA emphasized that the correct term to describe someone who works to extinguish fires and is involved in fire prevention is "fire fighter." The term "fireman" was described as someone who builds and stokes fires.
